Day 21

clearly hannah had a great time with the girls at jeneric's sunday brunch. we just needed tess and all the starting 5 would be in attendence.

6 am wake up - we'll take it. again, a snooze filled day the night before and the red fleece keeping her warm are attributed to the successful nights sleep.

why are we so obsessed with her sleeping through the night? well, it certainly makes our lives better, and it is a milestone after all. she also has a much better demeanor the next day when she sleeps well.

oh, she also rolled over this morning - twice - while mom was watching. the first time she got a little scared and started to cry but the next time she laughed. we'll try again this afternoon.

Day 20

she still loves her changing station -
must be grandpa howard's calming effect (fnny how that never worked on me:-))

starts out really well with a 6:30 wake up we attribute this to
  • she slept more yesterday than the last couple days - and 'they' say that sleep begets sleep - so be it
  • she was warmer in the fleece one piece
  • we were dog tired and may have slept though the 4 o'clock wake up cries (but we doubt it)
so todays plan is to let her sleep almost as much as she wants to. and to roll over - she's soooo close.

things do to today
  • make banana bread
  • run erreands on chestnut street - return stuff - walgreens
  • start getting ready for healdsburg - we leave on friday for a long warm weekend - woohoo
do i sound like a desperate housewife?

Saturday and Sunday

feels like we had a loooong weekend. hanging in marin with the valentines was a great way to get out of the fog. dad snuck off for a spin around tamarancho to return to mai tais and grilled leg o'lamb.

sunday was brunch at eric and jenna's to watch the tour de france on tivo - another great way to beat a foggy day into submission.

while we're still dealing with 4 am feedings and we're both feeling a bit exhausted hannah seems to be doing great although a bit too much sleepy sleepy during the day and not quite enough at night.

bring on week 4.

Day 17

starting to feel a bit more comfortable during tummy time

11:30 pm she woke up at 11:30 ready of a feed - is she getting used to the dream feeds now? eesh.
4:30 am - awake and starving again
after both times she fell back asleep quickly

she was kind of pukey all day yesterday. dad has finally convinced mom that her diet can effect her daughter's digestion. i really think she has issues with tomatoes, dairy and some other seedy/spicy stuff.

she's now down for her big nap. after that we'll try and get back on schedule.

sonia and domiano of www.juniorflav.com fame came over for lunch. we blew the photo op in the morning and by the time they had to go dom was sacked out.

went to visit the daycare yesterday - it's part of the marin day school / bright horizon's group. once i got over the sticker shock we're both pretty happy about the situation. we're set for the next 5 years and they will help getting in to the next level. i've talked with many parents at gap who's kids have a great time there.

i'll start her off gradually in september for a couple hours at a time and then maybe a few days when i will NOT go for bike rides.

looks like the fog is burning of a bit - have to get out for a stroll today.

as we wrap up week three things are going well. although there's been a bit of a set back with sleeping through the night we've got a very happy very healthy kid who eat like a champ, bats stuff around and is starting to grab onto stuff and a place for her to go in the fall, all or which we are very thankful for.

Thursday, July 26, 2007

Day 16

4:30 wake up, but it was expected. somehow timing got thrown off in the afternoon. she wound with no nap at all - just awake - and then going down at 8. she woke up at 11 very hungry. at that point i wrote off her sleeping through till 6.

she was very squirmy during that feed but calmed down eventually and got back to sleep by 5.

she's been sacked out in the chair this morning and i'll have to wake her yup soon if she does not wake up on her own.

Day 15 continued

hannah had a great time visiting mom at work. she got along with everyone.

the best news of the day was that we got a spot in daycare for the fall. whew.

Day 15

6:30 smiling wake up...oh yeah! i honestly think it's a lot of things
  • enough food during the day
  • enough sleep - but not TOO much during the day - no nap for more than 2.5 hours
  • wake up for the evening feed even if she's not awake herself
  • warm enough - the fleece sack is the way to go for sure, especially in our balmy summers here in SF
only problem now is mom and dad both woke up at 4 for some reason. need to get trained ourselves.

Supriya's been staying with us for a couple days and they really have been getting along better than it appears here.

big day today - going to visit mom at the office and meet alisa and the boss! what ARE we going to wear?!?

Tuesday, July 24, 2007

Day 14

7:30 wake up! the routine worked. keeping her awake after feedings during the day seems to be the trick - as well as just 1 good nap. trick is to keep it going.

we did think she was awake at 5 but she was just crying in her sleep. i turned on the white noise and she quieted back down.

farmers market at the ferry building today. nice bison burger with gorgonzola mmmm.

i must admit that when i bought the xterra 'changing station' was not one of the 'million uses' i had in mind - but it sure works well :-)

stopped by coco 500 to say hi to our old friend lotetta on the way home.

mom's coming home late after a work party so we must save our strength and patience. but she's been in such a good mood after a great night's sleep...fingers crossed.

Day 13

4 am again. we're moving backwards. must. correct. this. trend.
she's either
  • eating too much
  • eating not enough
  • sleeping too much during the day
  • not sleeping enough during the day
  • sigh
this morning is not promising as she passes out DURING her morning feed and will not be woken up to eat. let so i let her pass out - perhaps when she wakes up starving she'll eat then stay awake for a while which is the goal. we'll see how the rest of the day progresses. stay tuned.

Day 12 - Sunday

jenna came by to watch hannah for a few hours while mom and dad went for a spin. jack did GREAT considering she had not been on her bike for a year! we did 15 miles around town on a beautiful sunny sunday.

100th Day (Day 11)

today was hannah's 100th day, which is a significant milestone for koreans (see below). hannah got a gold ring from her grandparents and a fancy rice cake with "congratulations 100th day" or 'mazel tov for making it this far' you've got a good chance of making it to graduate school if you stay away from those bad kids behind the backstop.

we had a great lunch at a small korean restaurant in santa clara and hannah was extremely well behaved as usual even being passed around to the whole family.

the drive down and back wiped out mom and dad so it was time for family nap time when we got back.

Day 10

hard to believe it's been 10 days - and the end of my first full monday-friday stay at home dad week! so far so good - baby and dad are doing well. while she was up at 5 most likely due to the lack of the dream feed she sacked out again until after 8 so dad got another 3 hours of kip.

good thing because today was our walk around chrissy field and then a visit to the god among men - chris ross - best chiropractor - period. i've been seeing chris for about 20 years. it's hard for him to imagine me as a dad since in the past he's usually been fixing me up from snowboarding or rock climbing issues - not 'nursing' problems.

broke out the new camera and got some great shots.

hannah sacked out for much of the day but was very smiley when she was awake.

tomorrow hannah is 100 days old - a significant day in korean culture. in the old days if the child lived for more than 100 days they had a pretty good chance of surviving. these days it means lunch with the inlaws in the south bay. Link

Day 9

5 am wake-up - but she was cold. start heating up the bottle, realize she's wet so go to change her. go get the bottle and then disaster strikes! the bottle is too HOT! i let it in the warmer too long! she's screaming bloody murder and i keep hearing MK's voice in my head "did you test the milk ?!?"

since mom (and the rest of the block) is awake i ask for 'assistance'! she calms down on boob, i heat up another bottle - not quite as much and we switch - she takes it fine. "she's pretty amazing", says mom "or just a glutton" i say. she polishes off 4 oz and promptly passes out in my lap.

as i look down at her guilt ridden from the first time i hurt my kid i shudder to think of the future; the first day of school, taking off the training wheels, the first downhill slope! and how we will handle putting her into situations where she will inevitably get a little bruised. not to mention the trouble she'll find for herself.

gonna be a wild ride.

but for now she loooooves batting the elephant around :-)

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

Day 8

6:30 wake up! we'll take it. was it
  • the late feed?
  • closing her the door so the room was warmer?
  • the massive ammounts she ate last night?
  • the rain?
regardless, it was a nice quiet night.

Jackie cleaned up the spreadsheet!

a friend wrote:

I hope you can save these notes so Hannah can read them when she is an adult (yes, there will be a day when she is an adult!!)

Which was pretty funny because just that afternoon I was looking sown at her sucking on a bottle and thinking what WILL she be like at 14? at 22? at 39?

Tuesday, July 17, 2007

Day 7

mmmm sleeping with mom after a nice feed last night

5 Am sure seems a LOT earlier than 6 :-(. Her cry was not a hunger cry at it seemed like she just had some gas trapped "in the bottom". After trying to help her work it out she woke up enought so she was hungry. 5oz later (in about 20 minutes flat) and she was back to sleep. Sigh. Back to the drawing board.

Her hands were also freezing...still not sure what to do about the arms in the sleep sack. The theory is they are sleeveless so they can't suffocate on the sleeves...but what about the cold arms and hands!!! Need some arm warmers like we wear for cycling. Maybe I'll cut the sleeves off one of her old jackets.

Another foggy foggy day - try and get her back on a tighter schedule we think.

Day 6 Part 2

So we get out of the house, change the treo back to the razor since we don't want to read any more work email, stop at the bike shop for new cleats, pick up coffee and a cap, then head to Natural Resources since it's time to feed her and mom wants her weighed in.

My how time flies and all of a sudden folks are asking YOU questions!
Sorren's (who was over 10lbs at birth!) mom wants to know how to get the baby more comfortable with his dad uh, maybe if dad hung out with the baby more?
Are you really buying Gripe Water? Yes, I am - she gets the hiccups a lot and it clears them right up and she likes it. Old wives tale? could be but it works.

On the way home at the corner a young phillipina and a very geeky white guy come up pushing a stroller
"How old is your baby" she asks
"3 months" I say
"look at those cheeks..."
"Oh yours is cute too" I say
"She's 2 months.." she looks at me with sleep deprived eyes and asks "...Does it get any better?!?"
"Yes, it does, you'll be fine", I say and head across the street feeliing like a wizened old coot because I know exactly how she felt a month ago.

It feels weird, and comfortable and ironic since we're still figuring it out ourselves...but definitely a milestone.

Day 6

6:30 wake up. We'll take it! Was it the dream feed at midnight? The fleece sleep sack? Hanging out with mom on Sunday? Who knows? But we'll take missing a 4 am feed.

Back to the 'grind'
  • got mom out of the house
  • dishwasher emptied
  • bottles filled for the day
  • 1 load in the laundry, another on deck

if this ugly fog burns off we'll have to get out for more coffee from Ritual today - almost out and that could be a very very bad thing.

other stuff on deck
  • get the trainer set up!
  • a list of stuff we actually use on amazon

Saturday and Sunday

After a family trip tothe Alemany Farmers Market Jackie spent most of Saturday updating the spread sheet - correcting my formulas and adding data - so I could not get on to blog.
Eric and Jenna and Mary Kay and Tess (Parker Junior) came over for some grilled pork chops. Daddy and Eric hit the Makers Mark after dinner which made the 4 AM feed rather unpleasent.

Yes, even feeding her 6 oz at 10:30 did not get her to sleep through the night. The problem with the sleep sack is that her hands get cold and I suspect that aids in waking her up.

I did get a chance to experiment with Picasa and uploaded the 4th of July photos
there.

Anyone have thoughts one way or another on photosharing sites? i have to get off Kodak. So far Picasa seems pretty cool and they have a plug-in for iPhoto.

We're off to see Ken, Ashley and Casey in the East bay this afternoon.
Happy Weekend!

Tracking Sleep and Feeding

Here's a published spreadsheet of how I track her feeding and sleep times.
I find it pretty helpful. And Google docs is pretty cool as well.
This link is also in the right hand nav bar >

Labels:

Day 3

Well, she did get a good 3 more hours a fter the 4 am feed. she seems well rested and is back in the gym boppin the animals around after polishing off another bottle.
The photobooth feature on the MacBook has some cool build in effects.

So the theory now is that her 3 hour nap yesterday was too LONG and she needs shorter naps. We'll see how that works. More later...

We're meeting Diana at Zuni for lunch wooohoo!

Dream Feed

12:30 PM She seems to be sleeping well (or just hanging out but quietly) without the swaddle. Topped of with 3 oz at 12:30 should help her sleep through the night...we'll see how this compares to no dream feed.

fingers crossed and eyes closing...

4:00 AM and 4 more oz later...and you snicker over your latte
several theories fly through the head -
  1. should have kept her swaddled
  2. fed her too much
  3. fed her not enough
  4. she did not sleep enough during the day
  5. she was cold
  6. she was hot
  7. changed too much at one time
  8. should have let her cry it out - pr CIO as they say
and i'm sure i'll get different advice from all the parents out there including that that sleep trainng stuff is for the birds...she'll sleep through the night when she's ready.

Day 2

Settling in to being home with Hannah. This morning was rough - she woke up at 5 pretty hungry. Admittedly user error - I should have pumped another 2-4 oz into her at
midnight...sigh...live and learn.

After a short nap though she was up again and ready to go. We tried out the new chair Auntie Erika gave us for the first time!

We rocked out to some Jurassic 5 and had a great time as you can see.

We also had some great time on the mat again (see below) battin stuff around.
She's getting quite the right slam.

Then it was nap time. Time to lose the moses basket - just too big for it...and time to lose the damn swaddle.

Well, she did just fine! Check out sleeping beauty in da crib with da sleep sack on - such a big girl!

We took a looooong walk all the way to the post office on Bryant and 16th, then stopped at the meat market on Mission and 23rd to pick up some dinner.

She was awake for most of the ride. Mom got home in time to feed her which is always a good thing.

Things we learned today;
  • Fill all the bottles you need for the day
  • She's ready to sit up in the chair at 3 months
  • How to Blog

Day 1

Admittedly a post dated entry...it was a busy day though.
Hannnah had a great nap in the morning so I took advantage of the time and...
After much research, consultations and internal debate I decided on and ordered my new camera - woohoo! - should be here next week... - the nikon d80 with the new 18-200 lens - very psyched.

She was not tired at all in the afternoon so we did a couple laps around bernal hill. She did not mind the wind too much and dozed off at the end.

Hannah had some good tummy time and when mom got home she had a blast with the activity mat.
